What Should You Avoid Right After a Massage?

Most people do not need a complicated recovery ritual after massage. You can usually return to normal activities based on how you feel. A few choices are worth reconsidering if you feel light-headed, tired or unusually sore.

Avoid driving if you feel dizzy

Sit for a few minutes, stand slowly and make sure you feel alert before driving. If dizziness is severe or persistent, seek medical advice.

Do not force a hard workout if you feel tender

If the session involved deeper pressure and your muscles feel sensitive, an intense workout immediately afterward may be uncomfortable. An easy walk or your normal routine may be fine if you feel good.

Be cautious with alcohol

Alcohol can contribute to dehydration and impair judgment. If the massage left you relaxed or sleepy, adding alcohol may not be the best combination.

Do not treat pain as proof the massage worked

Significant or worsening pain is not a goal. Contact the provider or a healthcare professional if symptoms are concerning.
