How Long Does It Take to Walk 7 Miles? Pace and Planning Guide

Walking and foot recovery for everyday movement

Published by Tranquilla Wellness · Our editorial process

A 7-mile walk is a substantial outing for many people. At 4 miles per hour it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. At 3 miles per hour it takes about 2 hours 20 minutes. At 2.5 miles per hour it takes about 2 hours 48 minutes.

Estimated walking times

At 2 mph: 3 hours 30 minutes. At 2.5 mph: about 2 hours 48 minutes. At 3 mph: about 2 hours 20 minutes. At 3.5 mph: about 2 hours. At 4 mph: about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Prepare for the distance

Seven miles is long enough that footwear, weather and hydration matter. In hot conditions, choose cooler times of day and carry fluids. If you are not used to long walks, build distance gradually rather than jumping from a short routine to seven miles.

Recovery after a long walk

Easy movement, normal meals, hydration and sleep are usually enough for routine soreness. Our guide to sore legs after walking covers simple recovery strategies.

When to stop

Stop if you develop chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness, sudden weakness or sharp pain that changes your gait. Persistent swelling or one-sided calf pain also deserves medical attention.

For most walkers, finishing comfortably matters more than maintaining a particular pace for all seven miles.
