After a terrible night of sleep, going to bed hours earlier can sound logical. Sometimes a small earlier bedtime helps, but making a dramatic change may leave you lying awake because your body is not ready to sleep yet.
Protect the next wake time
A consistent wake time helps stabilize the sleep schedule. Sleeping very late and then going to bed very early can shift the clock in opposite directions.
Use a modest bedtime adjustment
If you are genuinely sleepy, going to bed a little earlier can be reasonable. Avoid forcing sleep several hours before your usual time unless your schedule requires a deliberate shift.
Keep naps short and early
A long late-afternoon nap can reduce the sleep pressure you need at night. If you must nap, shorter and earlier is generally easier to manage.
Do not compensate with excessive caffeine
Caffeine can help daytime alertness, but repeated late doses may make the next night harder and continue the cycle.
